This summer, I explored how artificial intelligence is reshaping healthcare—and why its most significant potential will remain untapped unless we change not only how we use it, but who leads its deployment.
AI is no longer theoretical. It is here, embedded in workflows, guiding decisions, influencing diagnoses, shaping access to care. But we must confront a fundamental truth: technology does not create transformation—leadership does.
Too often, AI is treated as an IT project, a procurement decision, or a technical challenge to be solved by engineers and CIOs. But the effects of AI ripple far beyond the server room. They touch patient outcomes, clinician satisfaction, workforce dynamics, care equity, and financial viability. That is why AI implementation cannot be delegated. It must be owned.
Leaders—clinical, administrative, executive—must take the reins.
They must question vendor promises. They must demand transparency and validation. They must work side by side with frontline clinicians to ensure that AI supports care rather than distorting it. And they must insist that patients—those most affected by AI-driven decisions—have a seat at the table.
This leadership must be paired with unwavering vigilance. AI systems, while powerful, are not infallible. They reflect the data we provide and the values we encode. They can amplify disparities or introduce new forms of error. This is why oversight cannot end at go-live. We need continuous monitoring, feedback loops, and accountability systems that evolve with the tools we deploy, ensuring their safety and integrity.
We also need courage. Courage to say no to tools that are not ready. Courage to pause when equity is at risk. And courage to take the long view—building systems that deliver not just speed or efficiency, but safety, trust, and integrity.
A Call to Action
This moment requires more than an interest in AI. It requires leadership.
If you are a clinician, do not wait to be consulted—step forward and shape how AI is used in your care setting.
If you are an executive, do not defer decisions to the technical team—AI is now a strategic imperative.
If you are a policymaker, a vendor, or an innovator, do not assume healthcare will adapt to your tools. Engage the people who deliver and receive care. Build with them, not for them.
The promise of AI is real. But whether it becomes a catalyst for healing or harm will depend on the choices we make now.
